Local shelter facilitates pet adoption

Around the same time a year ago, in September 2019, the Humane Society of Adams County animal shelter in West Union, Ohio, had already adopted 115 cats and kittens and 77 dogs and puppies. So far in 2020, the total number of animals adopted at the shelter is 68 cats and kittens and 69 dogs and puppies, an overall decline of 29% in adoptions since 2019.
There are currently 32 cats and kittens and over 20 dogs and puppies at the animal shelter awaiting adoption.
Normally, all animals adopted by the Humane Society of Adams County (HSAC) Animal Shelter in West Union are sterilized before they can be adopted. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, veterinary surgeries have had to suspend surgeries to allow personal protective equipment, such as gowns and face masks, to be diverted to medical staff in areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 virus.
Animal shelters like the HSAC facility in West Union have been forced to wait for pet sterilization, leading to an increase in the flow of adoptions. In order to navigate the save and get pets into homes faster, HSAC made the decision to change its adoption policy. Animals will no longer have to be sterilized before adoption. Adoption fees for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be reduced to encourage more potential adopters to apply for pets. It remains HASC’s mission to reduce pet overpopulation in Adams County. A sterilization deposit will be levied on each adopted animal. The deposit will be returned upon proof from the new owner that the animal has been sterilized.
HSAC believes the new adoption policy will allow pets to return home faster, freeing up space at the animal shelter for new animals in need.
The organization could still use donations, which are down ½ to 1/3 from previous years due to the pandemic shutdown and the inability to host regular fundraising events. Donations to the 501c3 nonprofit are tax deductible.
