Max and Erica Scherzer Cover Pet Adoption Fees for One Week at DC’s Largest Animal Shelter

Although Max Scherzer is no longer with the Nationals after his recent interact with the Los Angeles Dodgers, The All Star pitcher and his wife Erica thank the DC community by covering all adoption costs to the Humane Rescue Alliance from Wednesday August 4 through Tuesday August 10.

The weeklong promotion comes at a critical time for Rescue Alliance, as the group’s shelter and foster homes are currently at full capacity. “With this donation, they are enabling more Washingtonians to expand their families,” Lisa LaFontaine, president and CEO of Humane Rescue Alliance, said in a press release. “It’s a fitting legacy of kindness, generosity and compassion. “

This isn’t the Scherzer’s first act in favor of DC’s largest animal rescue organization. Erica Scherzer is a board member and the couple funded adoptions in 2017 to to make room for animals displaced in the area after Hurricane Harvey. Among other contributions, they also sponsored fees for adopting dogs with heterochromia (two different colored eyes), a condition that Max and two of their four family dogs have too.

Although the shelter is open for other services (such as handing over your pet), adoptions can currently only take place virtually. Prospective adopters can view the animals available on the Humane Rescue Alliance website and organize virtual meetings and counseling sessions. Learn more about the process here.

* An earlier version of this story said the Humane Rescue Alliance was closed to the public. Although it is closed for in-person adoptions, it remains open for other services.
