After capping off 2021 with a critically acclaimed sold-out UK tour, Soft Cell today shares new single ‘Purple Zone’, a new collaboration with Pet Shop Boys. The song will be included on their highly anticipated fifth studio album, Happiness Not Include, which is now slated for release on May 6.
The Pet Shop Boys attended one of the tour’s shows in London and immediately picked ‘Purple Zone’ as one of their favorites of the night. The two electro-pop legends originally planned for Pet Shop Boys to remix the song, but their collaboration quickly turned into a full-fledged collaboration. Not only is their collaboration a brand new single, but this version has also been added to the *Happiness Not Include track list.
“Purple Zone” is now a synth-pop connoisseur’s dream duet as Marc Almond’s ultra-expressive delivery intertwines with Neil Tennant’s nostalgic longing, summarizing the existential questions about the passage of time that arise throughout throughout the album. Upping its tempo, Pet Shop Boys also added a hi-NRG sheen that elevates the track’s brooding melancholy, with Chris Lowe’s dramatic synths producing a theatrical intensity.
Marc Almond says, “Working with the Pet Shop Boys has been a pleasure, and this track is the perfect combination between them and us.”
Dave Ball comments, “‘Purple Zone’ is probably our finest pop moment since the early 1980s”
The Pet Shop Boys add, “We are thrilled to collaborate with such an inspiring duo like Soft Cell on this beautiful song.”
“Purple Zone” will also be released on CD and 12″, which are available for pre-order here. The CD also contains Soft Cell’s version of X-Ray Spex’s cult classic “The Day The World Turned Day-Glo”, and the Manhattan Clique remix of “Purple Zone”, while the 12″ features a full selection of Pet Shop Boys mixes.
Featuring recent single “Bruises On All My Illusions” and album title track *Happiness Not Include, “Purple Zone” tells fans what to expect from Soft Cell’s first album in twenty years: a distinctive and striking balance between light and shadow, hope and despair, the personal and the universal. *Happiness not included is available for pre-order here.
It’s been two decades since Soft Cell released an album, but the influential synth-pop duo still arouses enormous public fascination. The news of *Happiness Not Include sparked international sparks from Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence, NME, Pitchfork and Stereogum – sparking a platform for them to add to their previous achievement: 25 million sales , six UK top 10 singles and a BRIT Award.
Their innovative cocktail of songcraft and forward-thinking production continues to exert an influence on the wider music world, as recently demonstrated by Jamie Jones’ remix of the era-defining hit “Tainted Love”.
