Tributes are pouring in for an Ayrshire pet shop worker who died just months after retiring

Tributes were paid to a much-loved Ayrshire pet shop employee who died suddenly last week, just months after her retirement.

Carol Young has been a friendly face of Troon Pets and Aquaria for the past four years.

The animal lover was a mainstay of the popular Church Street store and had just retired on Christmas.

Her former colleagues learned last week that she had died of a stroke at her Newmilns home at the age of 66.

Carol was rushed to hospital after the major clot on Wednesday July 21, but sadly died a few days later on Sunday July 25 at Crosshouse Hospital.

Troon Pets and Aquaria announced the devastating news to customers last week.

In a Facebook post, Audrey Young, heartbroken owner of the Church Street store, said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the sudden passing of my sister-in-law Carol who has just retired to Christmas after joining the Troon animals when Tom passed away four years ago. She was a great friend and my rock .. will be sadly missed by the whole family.

Audrey told Ayrshire Live how Carol intervened in times of crisis following the death of her husband Tom Young in 2017.

Supportive Carol stepped in to help the team cope with the shock loss and has since become a mainstay until her retirement after Christmas last year.

Supporters paid tribute to Carol who has been hailed as the “life and soul” of the store.

Audrey, 58, said: “We were all shocked and devastated to learn of Carol’s passing.

“She came to help me when I needed it most after my husband died.

“She was one of those dynamic people who were full of life, she loved talking to people when they walked in – everyone remembers her, she loved working here.
